Consider going for a bike ride if you’re thinking about things to do in Southwest Florida with your family. Imagine cycling on one of Sanibel Island’s bike trails: the sea wind in your hair, the soft sound of waves lapping onshore, appreciating the island’s natural scenery. Biking provides an excellent way to exercise, and you’ll have the chance to explore Sanibel and Captiva Island. During your stay at Sanibel Vacations, you’ll have access to our onsite Outfitters store, where you can get beach equipment and Sanibel Island bike rentals, so you don’t have to worry about tracking down a bike while you’re here.

Southwest Florida Trails for You & Your Family

Now that your bike rental quandary has been squared away, it’s time to figure out where to go next.

  1. Take a ride down the charming Periwinkle Way to see all the sights and sounds of our quaint little island. The paved path runs across a smattering of restaurants and boutiques that may interest you. Feel free to take a break from your Sanibel Island bike trail and pop in for a bit.
  2. Head to the eastern part of the island to see the historic Sanibel Lighthouse. The area offers a lot of lush, green shaded areas and seemingly endless bike trails. Plus, nothing beats that first majestic view of the Sanibel Lighthouse standing steadfast against an oceanic backdrop.
  3. If you’re hoping to see wildlife on your Sanibel Island bike trail, head to “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. You’re bound to see birds, alligators, and other animals native to the island when you bike this four-mile loop.
  4. The longest stretch of Sanibel Island bike trail runs on the western end of the island on Sanibel-Captiva Road. Biking along this side of the island will give you the best overall picture of the island as your bike past several island attractions, past “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, and plenty of beautiful beaches.
